Ep. 32 - Camping with Kids - what's that like?
Hey everybody! Happy Earth Day (yesterday)! We have a realllllly special guest today! And by special, we mean like Courtney's favorite person EVAH - her husband, Nathan! Nathan is alwaaaaays sitting with us around the table (because he our super-producer-editor-engineer-master-of-all-the-things), but today he actually got to speak this time! He knowledge goes beyond the technical and out into the wilderness, so we got him to chat with us about camping!
Nathan starts by mentioning the book, Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv, that talks about the nature deficit disorder. If you want to hear directly from the author about this subject, listen to this piece by NPR.
Are you like Jennifer and wondering where to start? Keep listening (of course), but also check out this camping advice from the National Parks Service, and look for the links at the top for where you can camp in National Parks. Google "(your state & surrounding state) state park camping" and remember to look for 'primitive camping' if you want to find one WITHOUT electricity or water hookups. (This is the one for our home state of Tennessee.) Start with your own state parks!
This is a link to the National Parks Passport books where you can keep track of your visits to ALL of our National Parks! And here is a great book and another super cute one when you're talking about National Parks with your small kiddos! You know we've gotta recommend a book!
Read about the principles of "Leave No Trace." This has great tips for how to leave a campsite as you found it. (You gotta bury your poop!)
Courtney brought up the She Wee - any gal listeners ever use one of these? Comment below if you're brave enough to tell!
Here is the Coleman Stove Nathan talked about for car camping, and here is the backpacking stove & kettle he mentioned as well. Here is a link for Mountain House food for backpacking camping. The link is for Nathan's favorite lasagna, but there are so many flavors!
And here is Nathan's favorite waterproofing spray for tents, rain jackets, etc.
From our "I'm Totally Into..." segment:
Courtney is totally into The Jones Market necklaces and shirts. Anyone want to get Jennifer the Memento Bracelet in Flamingo? 😜
Jennifer is totally into a Sudoku game app for her phone. It's called "Cool Sudoku", but be sure to look for this icon in the app store:
Nathan is totally into his GSI Camping Pour Over for Coffee.
So, if you have ANY questions related to camping, please post below or shoot us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org. We will happily forward on any questions to Nathan! Haha.
Big thanks to Nathan, and have a great week, mamas!
